Klopp’s astute Liverpool Rebuild

Time is proving that his inability to rebuild his Dortmund team after their back to back league titles and a UCL  final run has taught Klopp invaluable lessons. Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Manchester City served yet another classic.

One and half a season after lifting the once elusive Premier League title, Saturday’s victory puts the Merseyside club in pole position to win an unprecedented quadruple. It begs the question, why did we ever doubt this Liverpool team's desire to be the best team in England once again?

Perhaps I was alone in thinking the cycle for this group of players was up. I couldn't have been more wrong. "The team is really motivated because last season we came third. So we're all motivated to win something," said Mo Salah in a recent interview. "There's a lot of things to prove."

The meagre defence of their long awaited 19th league title was devastatingly hampered by the loss of key players, chief of those defensive stalwart Virgil Van Dijk. His reinstatement has brought calm back to not only their build up play but also effused a quiet reassurance in the team once again. The growing presence and now goal scoring threat of Ibrahim Konate is also welcomed.

Wijnaldum's departure doesn't seem to have weakened the team. If anything it has opened a spot for first Harvey Elliot and now Naby Keita to add a flair to the typically industrious Liverpool midfield. Add to that Thiago’s growing influence in Premier League games and as football tweeps might say- Liverpool are cooking. This is testament to Klopp's astute skill at squad rebuilding.

Time is proving that his inability to rebuild his Dortmund team after their back to back league titles and Champions League final run has taught him invaluable lessons. Despite the financial disparities between the two clubs, Liverpool for all intents and purposes are run much like a German team. A shrewd fiscal policy is complimented by staunch faithfulness to their recruitment strategy. He just happens to have a little more financial wiggle room than he did at Dortmund.
When calls were made of the supposed staleness of his famed front three last season, he knew that the singular inclusion of Jota would be enough to not only increase the competitiveness for a starting spot in the line-up but also give the team tactical fluidity. It might be early days but this January’s acquisition of Colombian frontman Luis Diaz is also proving to be yet another one of the German’s masterstrokes.

Klopp's tenure in Merseyside has shades of a young Arsene Wenger going toe to toe with Sir Alex Ferguson in the early 2000s. The behemoths he faces is Pep Guardiola.

Where Wenger tailed off due to financial restrictions, Liverpool have the organizational structures to continue to compete at the very top.

Add to that Mo Salah performing at his glittering best and eager to finish his career at the club and Roberto Firmino continuously redefining the false 9 position, there is a limitless number of other records to break in sight. It's no surprise the desire within the squad does not wane.

Klopp famously called his team “mentality monsters" and it’s clear to see now. The German has instilled a modern and competitive culture to the club. When Greek left back Tsimikas came into the team in place of an injured Andy Robertson, it was refreshing to see Van Dijk clearly helping him keep his mind in the game. Liverpool have regained the sought of confidence and mental superiority that sees them win the psychological battle way before their opponents enter the pitch. The fact that they have quietly clawed their way back into the title race with Pep’s City team speaks volumes.

"We've always  wanted to write our own story in this club   and the boys put a piece in the   history(book) of this team "

Klopp said in the aftermath of that infamous thrashing of Manchester United that meant he became the fastest Liverpool manager to 200 victories. Liverpool are a certified top five team in Europe and considering Klopp's clear and unwavering blueprint- there's no reason to doubt they are here to stay. Their Mancunian counterparts ought to learn a thing from the German led juggernaut.
